In 1898 Capt. W. Vincent Legge arrived in Sri Lanka. Legge, who was an indefatigable field ornithologist, almost immediately, set about obtaining information about our birds. Legge's efforts resulted in the publication of his monumental work A History of the Birds of Ceylon. In addition to his own contributions to ornithology Legge collated and included all previous information on Sri Lankan birds. It is not surprising therefore that until 1935 very few new works on our birds were published.
Today, interest continues to grow. This is indicated amply in the FOGSL 40-year publication "Siyo Sin"- Celebrating 40 years (2016). The desire for information continues, research keeps generating new information that is required for active conservation.
